MiKTeX is a modern TeX / LaTeX and related software application. TeX is a typesetting system created by Donald Ervin Knuth with the goal of producing beautiful books, particularly those containing a lot of math.

MiKTeX Free Open Source

It is very simple to install on a computer running Windows, Mac, or Linux. The installation wizard will guide you through the process. You do not need to be a computer whiz. A comprehensive set of plugins (software, styles, and fonts) is available to assist you in typesetting your documents.

MiKTeX’s integrated package manager will download missing components from the Internet if necessary. This enables you to keep your TeX installation as small as possible (‘just enough TeX’). The console assists you in updating your TeX system by installing the most recent package updates.

It includes TeXworks, a TeX front-end for editing and previewing LaTeX documents. The program is free and open source. You may share the tool in certain circumstances. Download and run the Basic MiK TeX Installer to set up a basic TeX / LaTeX system. The program has the ability to install missing packages automatically. That is, this installer is appropriate for Internet-connected computers.

Install MiKTeX on Windows

Download and run the Basic MiKTeX Installer to get started with TeX / LaTeX. MiKTeX has the ability to install missing packages automatically. That is, this installer is appropriate for Internet-connected computers. Check the prerequisites before running the installer.

Install the Basic MiKTeX package

The ‘Basic MiKTeX Installer’ is used to get a standard TeX/LaTeX system up and running. The installer can be found on the download page. You can begin by double-clicking the downloaded file.

Copy Terms

The wizard first displays the MiKTeX Copy Terms: carefully read the text and, if you agree, click I agree to the MiKTeX Copy Terms. Then click ‘Next’ to go to the next page.

The scope of installation

If you have administrator privileges, you have two choices:

Getting ready for a private TeX installation (per user).
Set up a system-wide (shared) TeX installation.

It is strongly advised to select the special installation

Setting up a shared (system-wide) installation requires administrator privileges, and you should keep in mind that maintaining a shared installation can become complex and error-prone. When you’ve made your selection, click ‘Next’ to proceed to the next page.

Guide to Installation

Accept the MiKTeX installation directory. You can choose another location if you prefer. To proceed to the next page, click the ‘Next’ button.

Settings

Using the wizard, you can choose your preferred paper size:

You can also change the integrated package installer’s default behavior. Select If you want to confirm the installation of the required packages, please contact me first.

If this option is not selected, packages will be installed without confirmation. Never choose if you don’t want missing packages installed. All preferences can be changed at a later time. To proceed to the next page, click ‘Next.’ Download MiKTeX Free Open Source.

Review

You have the opportunity to review your choices before beginning the installation process: If you are happy with the settings, click Start to begin the installation process.

The installation procedure

It will only take a few minutes to complete the installation. The progress bar indicates the approximate completion percentage: the next installation is complete, and you can proceed to the latest wizard page by clicking next.

Receive updates

When the installation is complete, it is advised to launch MiKTeX Console and check for updates.
